Things You Should Know
Permalink

Okay I thought about starting a thread about things you should know.  You know those little common or not so common knowlege things that could really make life a little easier if you knew them, and could get you out of some pinches in life from something minor like pulling a splinter out of your hand to jettisoning a warp core that is about to breach so your starship doesn't get destroyed when the core goes critical.

Okay well I think that I'll start this off with something rather simple.

I think that eveyone needs to know how to defragment their computer's or computers' depending on how many systems you have.

Now I'm not too sure how to do this on a Macintosh or Linux environment, but I do know how to do this on a Windows based evironment as do most of you, but for anyone who doesn't then well here's you chance to learn.

The way that I'm going to explain this will work on all Windows based evironments from Windows 95 all the way to Windows XP.  I don't know much about versions of Windows prior to Windows 95 such as Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11.

Now there are multiple ways to get to the disk defragmenter, but I'll only go over the way I choose to do it.  Snake will know the other ways better than I do so if you don't like my way ask him .

First double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, or go to the Start Menu and find My Computer in there.  When the window opens with my computer you should see your documents folder and a list of hard drive(s) and removable drive(s) on you computer. Find you hard drive which will be labeled C:, or if you have multiple hard drives or partions on your hard drive it will be lableled D: or some other letter.

However, I'm willing to bet that most of you only have one hard drive so it will be labled C:.

Right click on that drive and select Properties at at the bottom of the choices.  This will bring up a small window.  Select the tab named Tools and then click on the Defragment Button.  This will bring up the Defragmenter Window.  Click the analyze button which will check and see if you even need to defragment you hard drive.  If so then click on the Deframent button, and do not interact with your system while it is defragmenting.  Depending on the size of your hard drive it could take anywhere from a half an hour to several hours depending how badly the drive needed to be defragmented.

Whether not the drive needed to be defragemented or not I highly reccommend defragmenting your hard drives at least once a month.

Any questions?

Riku
