Tonight, my dad had the urge to go see the DOOM movie. So I said, "Okay, why not?"
The premise of the DOOM movie was to capture the atmosphere and feel of DOOM 3...something they did fairly well. The entire movie was dark, dank, and gory.
The movie starts with some scientists running away from an unseen force. The head scientist is able to lock himself in a room and send out a distress signal...enter the Rock. Rock plays the role of 'Sarge', commander of an elite special forces squad. The UAC calls them in, authorizing them to use any means necessary to figure out whats going on and contain.
Sadly, this is where the plot basically ends. John 'Reaper' Grimm, also known as the DOOM Guy from the games, finds out that his sister is in the facility, and hesitates about going. But heck, its not DOOM without DOOM guy, so hes quick to jump on board. This team (which is as cliche as you can get) goes to the UAC base on Mars. They head in, meet up with Reaper's sister, and blow stuff up. They find some crazy scientists, walk through some dark hallways, then get attacked. Repeat this formula for about an hour. Theres tidbits of story, about how previous inhabitants of Mars (humanoids who built the portal that gets the team to and from Mars) had a 24th chromosone (Earth humans have 23). This 24th either gives the human super abilites or turns them into monsters (aka how everyone gets screwed up and killed).
Thats right. No demons from Hell, which is the ENTIRE focus of the games. Just mutated people. So anyways, more crap gets blown up, Sarge grabs the BFG (Bio Force Gun in the movie..although Sarge refers to it as its more common name, the 'Big F**king Gun), and more stuff gets blown up. The mutants get back to Earth, Sarge goes nuts and decides to kill everyone, the rest of the team (except Reaper) gets killed, and Sarge apparently dies as well. At this point Reaper shoots himself (no, Im not joking. It ricochets off a wall and hits him above the...well, where the sun dont shine). His sister (the only other survivor), injects him with the 24th chromosone.
The 24th chromosone reacts to a special gene in the body. This gene determines whether you are basically 'good' or 'evil'. Reaper, OF COURSE, is good, and is transformed into a super soldier. At this point the perspective changes to first person, with Reaper going through the facility blasting crap (the best part of the movie, and alot like the games). He ends up finding Sarge...who also has the chromosone. Although hes evil. After a bit of chit-chat, Sarge shoots his last BFG round at Reaper, which Reaper dodges in a Matrix-style jump. Sarge runs off, Reaper follows...
The movie made we want to cry with what happened next. Both parties being out of ammo, they engage in hand-to-hand combat, much like the Matrix (without the slowmo). Sarge starts mutating, Reaper throws him through the portal and chucks a grenade through as well, and the place (along with Sarge) goes kaboom. Reaper finds his sister, gets on an elevator...and the movie is over.
So, I guess this is what Im saying...save yourself seven bucks, and dont see it at the theater. Wait until it comes out at the dollar video, or better yet, get it on a DVD or VHS rental.

I'll probably take your advice and wait until it comes out on video and rent it. Doesn't sound like much of a date movie. I guess all movies based off of games are bad.
The point is...this movie had even LESS of a story than the games. It was an excuse to blow stuff up. I mean, half the movie its just them shooting and missing stuff.
Oh well, 2007 will be the true decider of whether or not video game movies will always suck...for it is the year of Halo, directed by Peter Jackson (LOTR).

I dunno, the movie has a pretty big name to live up to. I have the feeling that everyone will expect too much and then be dissapointed when it actually comes out. You know sme people will be ticked off because you can't make everyone happy.
true mura, i do agree there, but hopefully it will be good enough that most people will enjoy it. for me it really doesn't take too much to please me, i mean i watch movies like The Black Hole and get a thrill out of its vintage scifi goodness.

Okay guys, I was a little bit hard on the DOOM movie. I failed to realize that the movie was DOOM...so lack of storyline is to be expected. I still feel that they could tone down the cussing a bit (the worst DOOM 3 had was 'da*n') because every other word in the movie is f*ck. I also am still bummed that they completely changed the premise of the story, being that its now a lot more like RE than DOOM.
However, overall, its DOES stay fairly true to DOOM, although the movie takes a few too many liberties.

yeah, i'm going to try and see if i can talk dad into going to see it this weekend, one because i don't go to the theater alone, and two well me and dad never do anything so i need to get him outta the house for a while.
